I can do that!
A Jack of all trades is a master of none... We have all heard this quote I am sure. If not you just heard it for the first time. Yall, I feel like this is SO me! I feel like I try to do a lot. I love to craft and make things. I like to try to cook, I like to try new things. In all those areas I am pretty mediocre. There are things I do that other people can do 10x better than I can.
In Sunday School we just started a new series. We are going through the book "I am a Church Member" written by Thom Rainer. During Sunday School the Pastor gave us a preview of what the first chapter of the book was talking about. Then he started to speak from 1 Corinthians 12: 12-31. This part of the chapter is talking about how there is ONE body, but many members.
I was so excited to start reading the book and looking to scripture to help me become a better church member. While on my way to work I figured I would listen to 1 Corinthians 12, instead of listening to the radio. I grew up in church, my dad was called to the ministry before I was born. So it felt like I was always at church and I loved it. I would not change a thing from my childhood/teen years. I felt like I knew how to be a good church member. For example, if you see a need in the church you help, you encourage the pastor, when there is a mess you learn to jump right in and help. I need to admit something to you. In my junior high years, I only helped clean after meals at church because I knew we could go home faster if I helped. I did not have the right servant's attitude for that little period of time, I have grown out of it don't worry! Back to the point of this blog. While I was listening to 1 Corinthians 12 several things came to mind and I wanted to share them with you.
1. We are all unequally designed by God. Boy, when you sit there and think about that it can make you feel very special. The God of this universe created you with specific talents and abilities, none like any other. Those talents and abilities were created in you to serve the Lord.
2. Since we have those special talents and abilities we need to use them to glorify God. We can do that by finding ways to use our talents in the church, by serving our families, for me serving my students at school. Be the best hand, foot, or toe you can be.
3. In the church our talents and abilities are not meant to be used by themselves. As a church, we need to come beside one another and use our talents and abilities together. This is how we are going to complete our mission here on earth. By walking hand in hand with each other to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.
That last point gets me because it is so easy for me to look at others and see their talents and abilities. I see how they are using those talents and abilities to serve the Lord. And Satan immediately reminds me of that quote, " A jack of all trades is a master of none." I begin to get discouraged because I do not have a certain talent or ability, or I feel mediocre in the talents that I have. But I cannot let Satan discourage me. Why? Because God has created me with talents and abilities that I need to use in the church so I can glorify him and spread the gospel. Just like the body needs all its members to work properly, so does the church. If we want our church to thrive, then we need to be using the talents and abilities God has given us.
"A Jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."
So, whether you feel like you are REALLY good at one thing, REALLY good and a couple things or you say I am not good at anything. I encourage you to pray. Pray and ask God to help you use those talents and abilities for Him. If you are that person who doesn't know your talents or abilities ask the Lord to reveal them to you.
I don't know about you, but I am ready to use the talents and abilities God has given me to serve my church, family, friends, and students.
